family’s journey home from a funeral ended in unspeakable tragedy when six relatives, including a young child, were killed in a horrific crash on the R42 between Heidelberg and Meyerton.
The victims had been traveling from Empangeni after attending the funeral of a loved one. Their vehicle, a Ford Fiesta, collided with a truck under circumstances still under police investigation.
A Journey Cut Short
Initial reports indicate that the driver of the Fiesta allegedly attempted to overtake a truck but lost control during the maneuver. The car veered into the truck’s path and was crushed on impact.
All six passengers in the vehicle were declared dead at the scene:

The truck driver survived the collision and is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
“They Never Made It Back”
Family member Mango Malindi spoke emotionally about the loss, describing the phone call that shattered their lives.
“They had just left the funeral of our relative, Lungi Malindi. We said our goodbyes that morning. No one could have imagined that it would be the last time we’d see them alive.”
He added that the family is struggling to come to terms with the devastating news.
“We’re broken. Losing one family member is hard losing six at once is beyond words.”
Investigation Underway
Police are still working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. The family says they will wait for the official findings before drawing conclusions, but their priority now is honoring the lives lost and supporting one another through another painful burial.
