A tragic act of violence has shaken the community of Lethabong in Pretoria East after a 19-year-old Grade 11 learner, Lethabo Mokonyane Matula, was fatally stabbed outside Lesedi Secondary School on Tuesday, June 17.

The incident occurred shortly after Matula had completed his final midterm exam and was preparing to board his scholar transport just outside the school premises.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), two 19-year-old Grade 12 learners have been arrested in connection with the stabbing. Early findings suggest that the attack may have been rooted in an earlier bullying-related conflict, which the victim’s family believed had already been resolved.

The brutal killing has ignited widespread outrage and reignited concerns over the safety of school environments. Community members, parents, and education officials are calling for urgent action to ensure that schools remain safe spaces for learning.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane strongly condemned the violence, stating, “Schools must remain sanctuaries for learning, not scenes of brutality.”

In response to the incident, the Gauteng Department of Education has deployed psychologists and members of its School Safety Unit to the school to provide trauma counselling and support to both learners and staff.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspects appeared in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, June 20, where they were formally charged with murder. The case has been postponed to June 27 for further proceedings.

As investigations continue, the community is left grappling with the loss of a young life and the grim reality of violence infiltrating school grounds.
