"I WANT to be out. I need to continue with the work I started."

A woman walked into the Masoyi police station on Monday, 28 April, with a shocking report a man had been seen digging up graves at the Swalala cemetery. Police responded quickly and arrested 28-year-old Kenneth Mokoena at his home later that day.

He now faces two counts of violating graves after allegedly exhuming the remains of his father, Bheki Mokoena, and grandfather, William Mokoena, who were both buried in 2010. There, in a bizarre and unsettling turn, the man was found asleep beside what police believe were remains taken from the disturbed graves.

Appearing in the Masoyi Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 30 April, Kenneth made a startling statement:

"I WANT to be out. I need to continue with the work I started."

He told the court he wanted to be released so he could complete the task he claimed had been given to him. The people that I dug out gave me the instructions to do this, and they want me to finish what I have started, he said.

Simon Mokoena, a family member, told Daily Sun the family was shocked by the discovery. We don’t know what pushed him to do such things, he said. The suspect is not mentally stable, but we will wait for the court’s decision and see what to do after that.

The matter was postponed to Monday, 5 May, for the appointment of a legal representative.

Given Kenneth’s disturbing insistence on continuing what he began, many believe he poses a serious threat and should remain behind bars for his own safety and that of the community.
