Hulk Hogan, the towering figure of professional wrestling whose charisma, catchphrases, and championship reigns helped propel WWE into global prominence during the 1980s and '90s, has died at the age of 71. His death was confirmed on Wednesday following an apparent cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida.
Emergency responders were called to the Hogan residence earlier in the day. He was taken out on a stretcher and transported to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. The news was first reported by TMZ and Page Six, with global outlets and WWE later confirming the loss of one of wrestling’s most enduring legends.
Born Terry Gene Bollea on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, Hogan began his wrestling career in the late 1970s. But it was in the 1980s that he became a household name. With his trademark handlebar mustache, bandana, and powerful presence, Hogan helped transform wrestling into a pop culture juggernaut.
His "Hulkamania" persona, driven by slogans like “Train, say your prayers, and eat your vitamins,” inspired millions. Hogan headlined eight of the first nine WrestleManias and captured multiple WWE (then WWF) and WCW world championships, becoming one of the most recognized athletes in the world.
Outside the ring, Hogan starred in films like "Suburban Commando" and "Mr. Nanny," and featured in the reality TV series "Hogan Knows Best," giving fans a glimpse into his personal life.
In the years leading up to his death, Hogan faced numerous health issues. He underwent multiple surgeries, particularly on his spine and neck, stemming from years of physical punishment in the ring.
In June 2025, rumors swirled about his condition, prompting concern among fans. However, Hogan’s wife and representatives had recently reassured the public, clarifying that he was recovering well from a spinal procedure and was neither in a coma nor facing imminent death. Tragically, just weeks later, Hogan suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
News of Hogan’s death sparked an immediate outpouring of grief and remembrance across the globe. WWE issued a brief statement mourning the loss of “one of the most iconic figures in the history of sports entertainment.” Wrestling stars, celebrities, and fans alike paid tribute on social media, recalling Hogan’s larger-than-life presence and the indelible mark he left on the industry.
International outlets from Europe to Asia echoed the shock and sadness, underscoring Hogan’s global influence. Publications like Bild (Germany), VG (Norway), Omni (Sweden), and Times of India all featured front-page tributes.
