In a poignant social media post, she revealed that despite being a dual citizen, she is currently unable to renew her South African passport due to bureaucratic obstacles, including the requirement to provide her late parents' South African identity documents and birth certificates records she believes should already be on file. This situation has left her feeling "despondent and in pain," as she is unable to travel to South Africa, a country she once returned to help rebuild after apartheid.

In March 2025, the Western Cape High Court condemned the Department of Home Affairs for its unlawful "gatekeeping" practices, which included unfairly denying citizenship applications without proper review. The court ordered immediate changes to how citizenship applications are processed, highlighting systemic issues within the department.

The Auditor-General of South Africa and the parliamentary portfolio committee have criticized the continuous extension of the Visa Facilitation Services (VFS) Global tender, deeming it illegal. VFS Global, which operates visa application centers in South Africa and other countries, is under investigation in the UK and Nigeria for alleged bribery and corruption. Despite these concerns, the Department of Home Affairs has continued its contract with VFS Global, raising questions about governance and accountability.
