Eyewitness News has re-released an archival video of KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, detailing how a civilian named Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi tried to meddle in SAPS affairs.
(Scroll down to watch the full video.)
In the clip, Mkhwanazi describes Mogotsi a man from the North West with no official SAPS role as attempting to exert influence over police operations by name-dropping senior government officials, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. He accuses Mogotsi of manipulating relationships within SAPS and creating instability through political interference.
This previously aired interview now has renewed relevance, coming just days after Mkhwanazi’s bombshell press conference on July 7th, 2025, in which he accused top national police leaders of colluding with organized crime.
🧠 THE BIGGER CONTEXT:
📅 Mkhwanazi’s July 7 Press Conference
In a dramatic Sunday morning briefing, Mkhwanazi made the following explosive allegations:
- Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya shut down an anti-corruption task team in KwaZulu-Natal.
- Case dockets involving politically linked assassinations and syndicates were seized or suppressed.
- Multiple state organs including police, courts, metro police, and correctional services are allegedly infiltrated by criminal networks.
- He opened a criminal case against the minister and declared he is “prepared to die for exposing this.”
He also pointed directly to individuals like Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi and Vuzimusi “Cat” Matlala, tying them to a pattern of political interference, dubious tenders, and criminal influence at the highest levels.
“This is no longer just corruption it’s state capture 2.0, through police and organized crime,” Mkhwanazi told journalists.

📌 WHY IT MATTERS
The archive footage shows Mkhwanazi’s warnings about corruption weren’t new or reactive they’ve been ongoing for months.
His July 2025 press conference connects the dots between these early incidents and alleged systemic criminal capture.
The EWN video now serves as a key piece of supporting material, bolstering the commissioner’s claims of long-term interference.
🧾 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
IPID and other oversight bodies have confirmed investigations into both KZN SAPS and national leadership.
The DA and EFF have called for an emergency parliamentary session and the possible suspension of Police Minister Mchunu.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, currently overseas, is expected to address the matter upon his return.
