Renowned South African actor Presley Chweneyagae was laid to rest on Saturday, 7 June 2025, during a heartfelt ceremony held in Pretoria. The funeral took place at the Akasia Community Hall, beginning at 8:00 AM, followed by his burial at Zandfontein Cemetery a notable final resting place for several prominent South Africans.


Chweneyagae passed away on 27 May 2025 at the age of 40. According to his family, the actor died of natural causes, specifically sudden respiratory challenges. His death marked a profound loss for the South African entertainment industry, where he had become a household name through iconic roles on screen and stage.


Best known for his breakout role in the Oscar winning film Tsotsi and for portraying Cobra in the popular television series The River, Chweneyagae's talent and charisma left an indelible mark on audiences both locally and internationally.


In the days leading up to his funeral, two memorial services were held to honor his memory. The first took place on 3 June at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in Mahikeng, and the second on 5 June at the State Theatre in Pretoria. These services were attended by family members, friends, colleagues from the industry, and devoted fans, all gathered to celebrate his life and pay tribute to his legacy.


Speakers at the memorials described Chweneyagae as “powerful, sharp, unapologetic, humorous, generous, and spicy.” His commitment to his craft, as well as his passion for uplifting others through storytelling, made him a beloved figure in the arts community.


As he is laid to rest, Presley Chweneyagae is remembered not just for his remarkable acting skills, but also for his vibrant personality and his contributions to South African culture. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of young artists and filmmakers.
