Floyd Shivambu Removed as MK Party Secretary-General After Malawi Visit

Johannesburg  The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has removed Floyd Shivambu from his role as Secretary-General following a controversial, unauthorized visit to Malawi during the Easter weekend. While there, Shivambu reportedly met with self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri  a figure who remains a fugitive from South African authorities.

According to a statement issued by the party, Shivambu’s actions breached the MK Party’s constitution and internal protocols. The trip was not sanctioned by party leader Jacob Zuma or the party’s national executive committee, prompting an internal investigation and swift disciplinary action.

From Prominence to Parliament

Shivambu, a high-profile figure who defected from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in August 2024 to join the MK Party, had quickly ascended the party ranks. His appointment as Secretary-General in late 2024 marked a pivotal moment in MK’s efforts to solidify national influence.

But his fall has been just as rapid. Following the investigation, the party confirmed his immediate removal from the post and announced that he would be redeployed as a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly.

Social Media Erupts

News of Shivambu’s demotion triggered a flurry of responses online. Many EFF loyalists and political commentators reacted with a sense of poetic justice.

> “That’s what he gets for backstabbing the EFF,” one user posted. “He couldn’t show loyalty to his first party he deserves none now.”

Other reactions mirrored the sentiment, accusing Shivambu of political opportunism and suggesting that his lack of ideological loyalty had finally caught up with him.

Dudu Zuma’s Shadow

Adding a twist to the unfolding story, speculation has grown over the role of Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of Jacob Zuma and a senior figure within the MK Party. Dudu, known for her influence and assertive online presence, has publicly criticized Shivambu in the past, casting doubt on his loyalty and political discipline.

While there is no formal confirmation that she played a role in his removal, several insiders and observers have pointed to longstanding tensions between the two. For many, her silence in the wake of the announcement speaks volumes.

> “It’s no secret Dudu didn’t trust Floyd,” said one anonymous MK source. “Their rivalry has been simmering, and this was probably the final straw.”

A Calm But Defiant Response

Despite the storm around him, Shivambu issued a brief but composed statement via X (formerly Twitter), writing:

> “Am truly and genuinely grateful for the tasks given and the redeployment. We will serve with excellence and discipline. #GwazaMkhontoGwaza”

The response suggests a willingness to accept the new role and remain active in the party though whether he retains political clout remains to be seen.

What This Means for the MK Party

Shivambu’s removal underscores the delicate balancing act within the MK Party as it tries to position itself as a serious force in national politics. While the party has seen rapid growth, its internal dynamics are increasingly drawing scrutiny.

Political analysts suggest the incident reveals more than a simple breach of discipline  it highlights a party still navigating issues of trust, hierarchy, and consolidation of power.

The MK Party has not yet announced a replacement for the Secretary-General role. Meanwhile, questions loom about whether Shivambu’s demotion marks the beginning of a broader factional purge or a strategic reset before the next parliamentary cycle.
