Thuli Phongolo Allegedly Dating Zimbabwean Politician Scott Kupa

 

South African actress and DJ Thuli Phongolo is reportedly in a relationship with Scott Kupa Sakupwanya, a Zimbabwean businessman and ZANU-PF member of parliament. The information was made public by entertainment commentator Musa Khawula, who stated that Phongolo is currently dating Kupa.

Scott Kupa was previously featured in Al Jazeera’s Gold Mafia documentary, where he was linked to gold smuggling operations across Southern Africa. He is alleged to be one of the biggest gold smugglers in the SADC region and is described by some as politically “untouchable” due to his wealth and connections.

Following Khawula’s revelation, social media users began speculating about the source of Phongolo’s luxury lifestyle. She recently posted a Richard Mille watch, estimated to be worth around R5 million, on her Instagram story. While Khawula did not claim that Kupa bought the watch, online speculation has linked the timing of the relationship to her ability to afford such high-end items.

Phongolo has also been frequently seen with expensive designer fashion, including handbags from brands like Louis Vuitton and Amiri, valued in the tens of thousands of rands. These public appearances have raised further questions about how she funds her lifestyle.

There has also been speculation about whether Phongolo has undergone cosmetic surgery, specifically a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). Some online users believe her appearance has changed, while others argue that she has always had a naturally curvy figure. She has not responded to these claims.

In addition, Phongolo is rumored to be returning to Generations: The Legacy. In March 2025, she posted a TikTok video from Urban Brew Studios  where the show is filmed with the caption: “You’re on set but then you realise your true calling.” She originally played Namhla Diale on the show from 2014 to 2018.

Neither Thuli Phongolo nor Scott Kupa has publicly commented on the relationship allegations.
