South African Actor Presley Chweneyagae Dies at 40


South African actor Presley Chweneyagae has tragically passed away at the age of 40. The news was confirmed by close friends early on Tuesday morning, May 27, 2025. At this time, the circumstances surrounding his death have not been made public.



Chweneyagae rose to international prominence for his compelling performance in the 2005 film Tsotsi, an adaptation of Athol Fugard's novel. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of South Africa’s most celebrated cinematic achievements.



Born on October 19, 1984, in Mafikeng, South Africa, Presley began his acting journey early in life. He honed his craft at the North West Arts Council and under the mentorship of renowned playwright Paul Grootboom. His mother, Agnes Keagile, named him after her favorite singer, Elvis Presley.



In addition to Tsotsi, Presley was well-known for his role as Thuso “Cobra” Mokoena in the popular South African telenovela The River, which further solidified his status as a household name.



Beyond his acting career, Chweneyagae was dedicated to giving back to the community through his Presley Chweneyagae Foundation, based in Pretoria, which focused on philanthropic efforts to uplift young people.
