Possible Serial Killer on the Loose in Sandton Following the Murder of Olorato Mongale

Olorato Mongale was a vibrant 30-year-old woman from Athol, Johannesburg, and a journalism graduate from Rhodes University. Described by friends and family as kind, careful, and full of life, she was loved by those who knew her.

On Sunday, 25 May 2025, Olorato was picked up from her residential complex by a man she had met online, known only as “John.” He drove a white VW Polo Vivo fitted with cloned number plates LT 57 JG GP  which actually belong to a Toyota Hilux.

The two drove through Alexandra toward Kew. Olorato was supposed to send her live location to friends as she often did, but when she didn’t, her friends grew worried. Despite taking the safety precautions society urges women to take  keeping loved ones informed tragedy struck.

Less than two hours later, at 4:50 PM, Olorato’s body was found dumped in a field in Lombardy West. Her phone and handbag were later discovered abandoned on 9th Road in Kew.

Police suspect that "John" may not have acted alone. A second male suspect is possibly involved. Gauteng police have activated resources and launched a manhunt for the suspect(s).

This tragic murder is not an isolated case.

On 8 May 2025, the body of a 39-year-old woman was found dumped on Catherine Street in Sandown, Sandton only kilometers away. The similarities between these cases have raised serious fears.

Adding to these concerns, another woman is now missing also last seen being picked up by a man driving a white Polo. She, too, was reportedly seen in or around Alexandra, Kew, and Lombardy West. Her disappearance remains under investigation.

Many now believe there is a serial killer targeting women in the Sandton area.

After Olorato’s death, a woman came forward on TikTok saying she was approached by a man matching the same description driving the same white Polo near the area where Olorato’s body was found. She recognized the car and trusted her instincts to walk away.

The South African Police Service has not officially declared a serial killer investigation but acknowledges the growing pattern of femicide and is urging women across Gauteng to remain vigilant.

In a separate disturbing case, a 24-year-old man used a fake Facebook profile to lure a 28-year-old woman to Limpopo, where he kidnapped and raped her repeatedly. She was rescued after escaping to a petrol station in Giyani. The man is in custody.

Women continue to be targeted through fake online profiles and manipulation, often with tragic consequences.

Police are urging the public to report:

  • Any sightings of the man or vehicle,
  • Any similar approaches by suspicious individuals,
  • Any suspicious activity near Alexandra, Kew, or Sandton on 25 May.
