John Steenhuisen’s Bloem Show Belly Sparks Social Media Roast: “Gwede’s Got Competition!”

DA leader’s Bloem Show post draws more laughs than likes as social media zeroes in on his ‘politician’s belly.’

What started as a wholesome political post quickly turned into a heavyweight social media roast when DA leader John Steenhuisen shared a picture from the Bloem Show in Bloemfontein. The caption, meant to highlight the annual livestock event, ended up drawing attention to a different kind of show  Steenhuisen’s newly-acquired “politician’s belly.”

“Good afternoon from Bloemfontein,” the post read. “I’m attending the Bloem Show, an annual event hosting stud breed championships, nationals, and world shows with more than 5,500 livestock over nine days.” But it wasn’t the bulls that caught Mzansi’s attention  it was the bulge.

Within minutes, users on X (formerly Twitter) latched onto Steenhuisen’s expanding waistline. “Looks like John is trying to compete with Gwede Mantashe for the Big Belly Award,” one user joked. Another added, “Since joining the GNU, my man has been eating well. Must be those agricultural tenders.”

Some even claimed the DA stalwart had officially boarded the “gravy train,” saying he now “looks like a real politician.” One cheeky commenter wrote, “Helen Zille was holding him back from enjoying the taxpayers’ money  now he’s feasting like a champion.”

The banter has reignited the internet’s favorite sport: trolling politicians for their apparent glow-ups (or grow-ups) once they get closer to power. While Steenhuisen hasn’t responded to the viral banter, insiders say he’s taking it “in stride”  though with maybe a slightly heavier step.
