Brigitte Macron’s Public Gesture Toward President Macron Becomes Focus of Intense Debate

Brigitte Macron's Public Gesture Toward President Macron Draws Widespread Attention

A video showing French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during a state visit to Vietnam has drawn significant attention and sparked debate online. The footage captures a moment in which Brigitte appears to make a quick hand movement toward the president’s face  a gesture that some interpreted as a slap.

The scene unfolded as the couple disembarked from their aircraft, with cameras capturing the brief but noticeable interaction. The video quickly spread across social media, fueling speculation, commentary, and memes. The ambiguity of the moment led to divided interpretations, ranging from humorous takes to pointed criticism.

French officials initially dismissed the footage as manipulated but later confirmed its authenticity. President Macron addressed the issue publicly, calling the viral interpretations “nonsense” and describing the moment as a private, playful exchange between spouses.

“This is just part of our personal dynamic,” he told reporters. “It’s been taken completely out of context.”

Nevertheless, the incident has provided fresh material for critics of the French president, some of whom used the footage to question the couple’s relationship. The 25-year age difference between Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron was also reintroduced into public discourse, often framed in a mocking tone.

In response to the growing online narrative, the Élysée warned of deliberate efforts to use the footage to undermine the president, citing broader concerns about misinformation and the role of foreign actors in shaping public opinion.
